This Saturday we’ll go kayaking in Naroyfjorden which is a part of the great Sognefjord.

The trip brochure says:
This trip is designed to show you most of the World Heritage park as we explore the historic area of the Nærøyfjord, which for centuries has been playing an important role linking together western and central Norway. We take you to places only accessible by kayaks and are the only company going here.
Our guide will ensure an unforgettable fun time for all the members of the groups they lead. Kayak sailing (wind permitting). Seal spotting on most days.

Sounds very promising

A Norwegian company called Nordic Ventures, located at Voss, is organizing this daytrip (and other 2-day trips) in Fjord Norway. Also possible as daytrip from Bergen, either by train or car. The trip begins at 9am at their base at Voss where they introduce us to our guide and other members of the day’s group.

What we have to bring
This is our first time paddling, so we’re not 100% sure, but this is some of the stuff:

• towels
• new dry underwear
• photo camera (we have a Canon D10 waterproof camera)
• hat (for sun protection)
• bottle of water
• fleece jacket

The drive from Voss to the fjord
The very scenic drive to the starting place by the fjord takes about 45 minutes. On the way we pass the Stalheim gorge before entering the Naroy valley leading down to Gudvangen at the mouth of the fjord. The Naroyfjord, Gudvangen and the valley leading up to Stalheim has been a popular tourism destination for almost 150 years – not without a reason, the scenery is spectacular and here, in this area, we will spend the day in the kayaks

Kayaking Equipment
They ensure that we’re properly equipped with our personal paddling gear for the day, and then we’re off to the fjord by car. The equipment is included in the price.

Kayaking and paddling instruction
Instruction in paddling, group safety and environmental care will be given along the way. All clients get comprehensive personalised instruction and briefing.

The kayak trip in the Naroyfjord
We visit waterfalls, pass small settlements and local farms, as we pass through the narrow fjord that is only a few hundred metres wide at places. We are likely to spot seals, they are seen on most tours from a distance and sometimes do come by for a closer look. We did not see any seals this day.

…and for lunch
At lunch we enjoy a delicious barbecue lunch, relaxing, exploring, swimming and taking photos. The tour is catered and includes barbecue lunch and transport. They cater for most tastes and vegetarians are welcome. Special dietary needs need to be advised in advance. Their meals are fresh and generous.

Recover at Voss?
After a day kayaking you may consider staying the night at Voss to “recover” from paddling and all the impressions during the day at the fjord.
